Rueben and Lucy Fox of Randalia own and operate Fox Produce with the help of their seven children. The Fox's moved from Pennsylvania to Iowa in 1997 and purchased a four and a half acre acreage near Randalia in 2005. The Fox's have increased demand for locally grown produce by offering thirty kinds of vegetables and flowers including vine ripened greenhouse early tomatoes, early cucumbers, mums, poinsettias, bedding plants as well as baskets. Lucy offers fresh baked bread, chocolate chip cookies, and cinnamon rolls on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Fox Produce started with a card table under a shade tree and has already grown through a hayrack to a permanent stand. Besides their roadside food stand, they also sell through the Fayette Farmer's Market and to Hillcrest nursing home in Sumner.
The demand for their local produce has exceeded their acres of production so additional produce is purchased from relatives near Cresco and other local producers. They plan to expand by adding more greenhouses and an enclosed produce store to insure a larger supply of early produce, bedding plants and a place for more local producers to sell produce.
In addition to their local vegetable and flower operation, Rueben exhibits his exceptionable woodworking ability by building cabinets and designing kitchens. They enjoy meeting people and making new friends, and love the rural Iowa mentality. Lucy enjoys giving cooking tips for their fresh produce and notes that when she does so, the buyers always come back for more. Even with the slow economy, Rueben and Lucy still see the demand for their family owned, family raised fresh local produce growing every year.
Fox Produce is located just east of the junction of State Highway 93 and County Road W 14 between Fayette and Sumner.
